i have two best friends and i already chose one for the maid of honor. i didn't know exactly what a matron of honor was so i ask my other friend to be it, but she isn't married. does a matron of honor have to be married.

Yes..that's the idea. Did your unmarried friend except the position of matron of honor?
Maybe have 2 maids of honor. They can split up the duties.

Usually, the difference between a Maid of honour and a Matron of honour is marriage. Maid usually meaning unmarried. You could have two Maids of honour if you choose. They would hold the same status as each other.

You can if you choose. It may cause problems, depending on the attitude of your present MOH. If her feeling would be hurt by this or cause a rift between the two of you, then it might not be a good idea. But if she wouldn't have a problem with it then go ahead.
