Sorry Janette, I have no idea what you are referencing. Personally, I like goldfish - I had a $0.69 "feeder" fish for about 10 years. I kind of wonder about the 7 second memory - my fish learned to respond to a person walking into the room (swam to the top of the tank and rooted around for food at the surface). It also would lie down at the bottom of the tank at night, apparently sleeping, if goldfish do that... I like crawdads, too. In fact I ate a big plate of them day before yesterday in New Orleans. They are kind of like bugs, in a tasty way. Now mosquitoes, those are an evolutionary error. Mary, You go for the fish if that's what you want. I'm sure Raymond will love them.

Mary- I am planning on having fish as centerpieces too, so go for it! They will be in water, their natural habitat swimming in their little fishy circles. Afterwards I will either find them a home or a friend of my brothers has a pirahna. And I refuse to be intimidated by activists. There is a natural order of life and species and fish are not at the top of the list- take a look any any restaurant menu. :)

Robin, you know I'm not an activist either. Not that I mind being called one, except that Tammi & Mary make it sound like a dirty word. I use my brain to think about others besides myself, outside of my own small part of the world. If that makes me an activist, so be it. I prefer to see it as not being ignorant. I sometimes eat fish, but not much. Don't like the taste.

referring to the comment about not wanting to eat dinner in front of fish..... I have been to a dinner where goldfish were in little glass bowls as centerpieces. It was gross. The fish pooped and left that loooonnnnggg string sticking out of their butt. Not appetizing. And a fish was floating at another table. I like eating at places that have big aquariums, but somehow that is different. The fish are not right in front of your face when you eat. At least I have never been to a restaurant where the aquarium was the centerpiece! so....I am not "intimidated" by these fish, just a little grossed out....

Ditto to what Suznyc said. I don't really care for labels all that much, but I will proudly take the activist label if need be, although I really don't see any comments from anyone to be labeled that way...hmm, feeling defensive?

I agree, activist is not a dirty word, but so many make it sound like it is. Hey, if that the name someone wants to call me that then go ahead. I'd rather be called human though. Someone who gives a damn and uses her common sense when it comes to right and wrong. Yes, most fish are slimy creatures, but then so are some members of our species. We don't treat them in this way.

I am a domesticated animal rights activist, and damn proud of it. I've fostered over 50 homeless and abused animals, rescued animals from petstores, pounds, puppy mills, streets, race tracks and horrid homes. So if what I do and what I belive in is "dirty", crazy, and intimidating, more power to me. I focus on cats and dogs mostly because hey, I can't save everything, leave that part to PETA As far as these fish go, all anyone with a heart wants you to do is take care of them, and not flush them down the toilet when the last guest leaves.

I wouldn't call myself an activist but.. I would like to say something anyway. I think this is just a tiny small thing. Not to use a goldfish as a centerpiece at your wedding just because it would have to be flushed down in the toilet afterwards and in the same time serve veal for your reception dinner(or any other meat, fish or poultry) would be diminishing the purpose. What would cause the least suferring for animals? Flushing the goldfish down the toilet or producing the meat(especially veal)? I'm not saying the goldfish shouldn't be shown any respect. It's just that I think there are other things to be concerned of as well.
