Threads : Goldfish in the centerpieces?

Yes, most kids would love getting a pet and most would look after them fine. BUT, what happens when the kid gets bored with the fish swimming around in a tank? And, the kids don't have to pay for a tank, food, cleaning supplies, vet bills, etc., the parents do.

Most don't think about what will happen to the fish afterwards and those that do, most of the time, only ask a few people and assume the rest will feel the same. Or the few they ask are saying yes, because they feel they have to. What they do with the fish afterwards is often a different story.

Jill - a new theme! A pet themed wedding! Lots of cute kittens & puppies in cages, and a raffle at the end to give them away! Instead of bathrooms, litterboxes & newspapers could be placed strategically around the room, behind screens, for the guests to do their business. Or maybe just out in the open. Certainly the little cuties could be dressed up in doggy & kitty tuxes and bridesmaids dresses and escort the bride down the aisle. And of course, other types of pets should certainly be included. Lizards, snakes, hermit crabs, turtles, birds, tarantulas, the list just goes on. Too bad I already had my wedding, this would have worked great for us and our 3 cats!

Are we all talking about the same kind of goldfish? The "feeder fish" that people use to feed their other fish, and little kids buy as their first pet?? I'm confused about paying for vet bills, and having the fish live for 7 years after the wedding??? Those have nothing to do with my experience of goldfish. :-)

By the way, I've come across an interesting fact about goldfish somewhere in my studies (don't ask!), that they have a memory span of about 7 seconds. So, everytime they swim around their bowl it's like brand new territory! So, while I wouldn't put them in a drinking glass, the centrepiece bowls sound just fine as far as size goes.

I do advocate taking care of the little guys however- ie NO candles in the water, and covering the top with tulle or something to prevent little hands from sneaking in. And try to arrange a plan for them afterwards, for certain people to adopt them (they don't have to take just one!) - it might be nice to include the bowls as part of the deal too!

I don't see anything wrong with the idea if it's done properly - it's not like these fish ever have a chance to live in the wild - they are already at a pet store . . . provided they are going to people who will take care of them rather than eat them, the fish are all set.

I really am going to feed the goldfish that arent taken home to my cray fish. Hes gotta eat. So he wont be flushed, they'll be part of Gods wonderful food chain. As for the vet thing, I knew this would fire up some of you ladies having read some of the other threads, but thier goldfish! How much is a can of food, $3? And it lasts for months, probably longer than fish stays alive... so if it will make you all happy I will feed them all to my cray fish.

Your attitude sucks, Mary. Do whatever you want, after all it's YOUR day. It's obvious you've made up your mind. You asked if it was strange or uncommon, well I think it's strange, however it's certainly not uncommon. Plenty of people seem to do it, so if you think it's a unique idea, it's not.

But really, it doesn't personally bother me that you're going to use goldfish, just do let us know how it worked out.

Robin - how could I have forgotten? Also, I think, a dove release would be fabulous, so that they can crap all over the guests.

Personally, I'd be a little grossed out to be eating at a table with a goldfish swimming around in front of me. I'd think it was cruel and not nice for the fish. Not to mention, what if someone gets plastered and knocks one of those things all over. Gee, lovely memory of the bride and groom's first dance..OOops, "SQUISH"!
Yeah, that's lovely.

Just think of the fun of watching drunken guests swallow the fish alive! What a wonderful wedding memory. Hope the photographer gets a picture!
