Hey Lethe, Just thought I'd say hello! I'm a fellow vegetarian. (Not a vegan - just a vegetarian). YEA! AND an atheist and a liberal who believes in abortion rights. How's that for controversial ;) And to be even more controverisal - I figured I'd ask you were you, Lethe, draw your line...do you kill ants & cockroaches, wear leather shoes, did you feed your cats meat products, do you wash your sheets and kill the little dust mites, do you brush you teeth and kill the bacteria? Just wanted to throw in my 2 cents and point out that it's impossible to exist without infringing on or killing some living creatures. I chose to be a vegetarian because I think it's right - BUT I personally don't try to convert people because I find it annoying when people try to thrust their religious, political or ANY beliefs on me. Wow - I just re-read this and Lethe - it's not meant to be a person attack. Just my humble opinion. And I seriously would be interested in hearing about where you draw your 'vegetarian line.'

Very controversial, indeed Therese! I suspect we think alike on many things, with the exception of our food choices... Oh yeah - you were directing your comments to Lethe. Sorry - I couldn't resist joining in (when can I ever?). :-)

Therese as Lethes fiance I can answer a few of your questions! :) Roberts not a Vegan either he still eat cheese and milk and eggs... but no meat or fish or any thing of the sort!! He dosen't ware leather (so hard to find him shoes :) ) he wont kill bugs Wich is really bad when there is a bug on me!!! :) We even stop and pick up all the worms on the side walk when it rains and they venture out there! As for cat food he was a meat eater last time he had a cat so then it was not a subject I guess and it was a family cat so his parents fed it what they pleased! He dose brush his teeth and I wash his sheets so there is a little death toll caused by him! :) I must say Lethe dosen't try to change any ones ways. He dose like to debate the idea and lets you know why he is a vegie and lets you deside from there. He dosen't think less of any one who eats meat either. Personally I still eat turkey and chicken when we go out for dinner and thats fine with him and lets me deside if I wana be a total vegie myself. I must say he puts up a really strong case for being or becoming a vegie it would be interesting to see what you all thought about eating meat after he told all of his thoughts and facts! :)

Well, I certainly do respect vegetarians. However, I am a little confused. If Lethe eats milk & eggs, according to him, that contributes to the pollution, distruction and starvation for poor countries because milk & eggs are from animals that use the vegetation grown for them. If you eat the animals themselves or the products that come from those animals, the vegetation is still grown for them & I thought that was one of Lethe's arguements. (I know that is not the only reason he stated for being veg) (hey, I did the worm thing too when I went for a walk after a recent rain!)

Lovebug - it sounds like Lethe is a lot like me as far as the vegetarianism. So he's a good catch ;) Just to push a little further though... (I'm such an instigator!) If you guys had a pet with fleas or ticks - what would you do? Get a flea collar to kill them? If your future children get lice will you shampoo them with the lice killer shampoo??? Just being a pain in the ass!!

I am the youngest child too! Sometimes ya kinda gotta speak up, be a pain and be straight to the point to be heard in the crowd when you are the youngest. I don't remember getting spoiled either, although all my siblings think so! :) (maybe that is where I got my soapbox! - plus, I did HAVE to learn more to keep up with older siblings)

Lots and lots of comments on what I said! That's nice, but I guess I can't comment on them all. I could stay typeing for hours just commenting one of them. To try to clear this out. I try to be a rational vegetarian. That means I think I myself have the right to live and to have some freedom. I like the idea to be able to live without killing anything at all but that's impossible. I don't look down on the road all the time when walking to avoid stepping on anything living but if I would see something I would avoid stepping on it. You can't spend all your time making sure you're killing as little as possible. I have my own preferenceutilitarism. It means kinda like ratioanl consequence ethics. That means you make sure that what you do causes the most happiness in the world or the least pain. In better words maybe you see to all the interests living beings might have and weigh them together to see what the right thing for ME is to do. Example of interests and who can have them. A stone wouldn't care if you kick it or not. It doesn't have an interest. A chicken would mind if you kicked it, it has an interest in you not kicking it. What consequences come out of this? I have told you about the disadvantages in an earlier post. In short, the chicken has an interest in not being fed up in a small cage where it's stressed and can't stretch its wingspan out and is unable to do many other things that it has natural instincts to do. My winning is a good meal. I am able to get a similar meal out of vegetables and I even find out it's better for me to eat the vegetables and better for the environment etcetra etcetra. Conclusion it's better to eat the vegetables. No loss for me, only winnings(except for maybe taste but after eating vegie a while at least I didn't miss the taste) and ONLY winnings for he chicken. Ergo sum: MY personal ethics say it's better to be vegetarian. I guess what I am trying to say is that it's really easy to avoid eating meat and there's so much to win in doing that for so many beings on this planet and the planet itself. I still eat some dairy products and eggs. I can't live up to my own ethics 24 hours a day but I try to make the world a better place. I'm only human too and I don't see myself as a higher being or a saint just because I don't eat meat. The small step is to quit eating meat and that makes som much difference. I am not ready to make the last step yet and it won't make as much difference as the first one. Let's see if I can find some unanswered questions and see if I can make the answers shorter. = ) If my kids would get lice I would kill them yes. The lice are like parasites and they are causeing my kids trouble. As I said before I am trying to be rational. You can't save them all. My kids shouldn't have to suffer from that. But that's a totally different thing than avoiding eating meat. We produce meat in animal factorys where their interests aren't considered. We can avoid that without suffering but letting lice stay in your hair??? Do you see the difference? Susnyc, welfare diseases is not a European thing that we think americans have. Welfare dieases are spread in all of the richer countries wich includes almost all of the countries here. It's not something made up. It's a fact. So many people eat too much of some things but in the same time to little of some other things. I don't think we are that much better at eating the right food here then over here. I would like to add something. Maybe I sounded like I don't respect people that eat meat but I do! I'm marrying someone that dose. Everyone has the right to decide for themselves what to eat but if I think we would make a better world by avoiding eating meat I think I have the right to tell you. Wouldn't you tell people about advantages in acting a certain way if you were certain that it would have good effects on the world? SO I hope you don't feel "attacked". I think I wrote to much for you to read now but I'd like to end this with a quote. "Nothing will benefit human health and increase the chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet." Albert Einstein

I don't feel attacked, but I do feel preached at. Which I dislike almost as much! :-) I understand and respect your reasons for wanting to be a vegetarian. I think as a whole, people are trending toward a more vegetarian diet. More often than not, I go a whole week or more without eating meat. I believe in everything in moderation. I just find the term "welfare disease" insulting. Who came up with this term, anyway? I've never heard it before, and I consider myself fairly well-read and in touch with many different issues in America. I'm really curious as to where the term came from. Once I know that, then I'll decide how insulted I am by it! :-)
