Okay, some of you may think Im nuts doing goldfish centerpieces. I mean real goldfish in round glasses from the dollar store with clear irradescent flat marbles? Well even if it is strange, its not common (or am I blind)? Anyway, I need ideas if someone can help me. The glass bowls I was going to use are like goldfish bowls but thier only about 5 inches high and the tables still need stuff...???

Mary, Hi, no I dont think you are nuts,:) I have seen it done and had orders for many myself for weddings, the first one was eight years ago for my mums wedding and she gave each child a fish to take home, and kept two for her that she had for quite some time. Then through work over the years I have done a few more of them. For the fish sake though, you should remember a couple of things, one being, make sure the bowls you choose are big enough for them to be comfortable and able to swim around and not be stressed out, do something to prevent people sticking their fingers in and dropping food in, like either a lid or some tulle, I have heard some horror stories involving people sticking knives and forks in the jars after a bit too much alcohol...I usually make them in high glass spagetti jars with ribbon , and a flower arrangment on top, leaving the lids slightly ajar so they still have oxygen & causes as little stress to the fish as possible, and we dont do so many of them here these days. I guess if the tables still need things, you could add ivy trailing down the middle of the table, or how about wishing stones? the same as the pebbles in the bowls? we had wishing stones on our tables and they looked pretty and everyone took them home with them. Have fun and enjoy your planning :)

Another thing for the fish's sake! Make sure you wash the bowls and stones in hot hot water!! kill all the germs! also it is not good for the fish to be put into fresh tap water... ahead of time put some water in a CLEAN container and let it set a few days 2or3 and then use that water... there is also some thing out there that will help the fish out its called stress coat...a drop of it will easy the fish some. What ever you do TAKE CARE of the Fishes!!!!!!

For the fishs'sake, don't use them. What are you going to do with them later? Most people won't appreciate having a pet foisted upon them and the poor things will probably end up flushed down the toilet. It's becoming more and more common for people to goldfish centerpieces, it's not a unique idea anymore. It is, however, rather cruel.

I couldn't imagine using live fish for decoration. I'm sorry I don't mean to be rude, but why fish? And like Susan said, what are you going to do with the fish after the reception? And a 5" inch bowl is not very big for fish to swim in. JMO I would look at some of the previous threads for center piece ideas.

What would you do with the goldfish afterwards? Do you have a pond at your home that you will put them in afterwards? Give thought to the fish please. Don't give live animals as gifts. Bad idea. I also don't like seeing them as "prizes". That some MIGHT take care of them is not enough when you're dealing with live creatures! I don't have a problem with fish as decoration as long as you also care for the fish. For example, I enjoy the fish tank at Rubios, but they are in a stable environment too. Moving, water changes, strange happenings are stressful for fish. I actually thought about using fish as centerpieces for my rehearsal dinner while acclimating them to water. My parents lost some of their fish & they want some new fish in their pond. The rehearsal dinner would be at my parents house. I will have some floating candles on the pond. I thought about putting the fish in the pond afterward, but I'd hate to do the idea if other people might do the same & not think about the fishes.

Geeze ladies! What a bunch of animal lovers you are over a $.34 slimy, not endangered fish. Im not going to hurt the my cray fish is just gonna eat em, they gotta eat! (Just kidding) My mom is taking a few home and there will be some kids there that I will give them to. The bowls are 5 inches high and 8 inches wide, so I think theres plenty of room, thier almost the size of a real golf fish bowl. Dont worry, I wont kill the slimy puckering little fish (Ive seen people swallow them in college ya know!) :)

Mary, it's nice to see the respect you have for living things. I respect for all living things, (with the exception of cockroaches, which I firmly believe are some sort of biological error). How we treat even the smallest of living creatures is a reflection of the type of people we are. I was trying to figure out which part you were kidding about, but it seemed rather confusing. And again, how are the kids' parents going to feel about having a pet foisted on them? You put them in the position of not really being able to say no. But, I guess since they're just slimy puckering little things that aren't endangered, they're not worth your consideration.

Why don't you use a "nautical" Theme instead? Buy those gorgeous wooden lighthouses and scatter seashells on the table and maybe have an aquarium on the place card table? Something you can take home and keep to remember your day? I had Beta fish all though college..Freud, Pavlov, and now Skinner. I treat them the same as I would treat my cats and dogs. How would you like if someone put a dog in a cage and used that as a centerpiece?

wow! I maybe Im strange, but I dont see a problem with giving fish to kids if its been arranged with the parents before hand,or that you have thought of what will happen with them later, and Im asuming thats what anyone would do? and most kids would love getting a pet and most look after them just fine. Ours lived for a extra seven years in a pond, as I said before there is a careful and responsible way of having goldfish as a centrepiece.
