Threads : Rehearsal Dinner: Invite the Organist???

This question is about the rehearsal dinner. For the rehearsal dinner, we've invited everyone involved in the ceremony (officiant, wedding party, sibling vocal quartet, & readers), as well as immediate family from both sides and spouses of any people involved in the ceremony.

The organist is someone we hired based on hearing him play as a guest organist at my church. He's not a personal friend of ours. We met with him about 4 months ago to give him the music we wanted, and we've communicated with him a few times since then. He's coming to the rehearsal and we'll give him his fee.

I was just wondering if people typically invite the organist (or other hired musicians) to the rehearsal dinner. I'm not really talking about the organist at your church who knows your whole family and is a good friend, or your college roommate who's playing a flute solo during the ceremony. I'm talking about the professional who's being paid for the rehearsal and the ceremony, with this service being the only connection to you.

I know we invited the minister to the rehearsal dinner, but it doesn't seem quite the same. He's definitely more than a "service provider," even though he does receive a stipend or honorarium. I know you provide a meal for vendors (band/photographer/DJ) at the reception, too, but technically, the rehearsal dinner is after the rehearsal, and not simultaneous to the provided service the way a reception is.

I don't think it's typical to include the hired professionals in the rehearsal dinner, even though they are involved in the rehearsal. But I was wondering what others have done.

Just looking for input. What did you do, or what are you planning to do???

Amy - I don't see any need to invite the organist. Really, the rehearsal dinner is just for the wedding party, immediate family & friends, and the officiant, if he/she is able to attend.

We are inviting ours and her spouse. I really never gave it any thought. I thought it was the thing to do. But on the other hand, if it were someone that we did not know well or hired her out for the wedding then we might not have invited them. That is a good question.
