Dance order?

Bride/Groom, Father/Daughter etc. ?

When do the guests join in?

Good question! My groom and I plan to be announced with the wedding party then go directly to the dance floor. Here's the order:

1. Wedding party dance
2. Eat dinner
3. Bride & groom dance during coffee/desert
4. Father & bride dance*
5. Cut the cake
6. Everyone dances for rest of evening

This way, all obligatory traditions are out of the way right after dinner. More time to relax and enjoy!

* During our father & bride dance I plan to have groom & his mother, and my mother & groom's father join us in the dancing.

Oops! Can't have desert if we haven't cut the cake yet! I meant after dinner is finished and cleared.

Bvan - you might want to rethink the order just a little. If I'm not mistaken, the B&G dance together first to "open" the dancing. I'd suggest switching the order to your dance first, then the wedding party dance after dinner.

Screw (some) traditions! : ) Our wedding is definitely NOT by the book. I have a great song picked out to "enter" the reception, but it must include the entire wedding party in order to work. Maybe we could go right into the bride & groom dance after the wedding party, then have dinner. The bride & groom would still go before any of the "regular" guests, so guests would get the hint that it's OK to boogie on down...

Oh - I didn't mean it was a tradition, necessarily, although, now that you mention it, I guess it probably is! LOL! Without fully knowing your plans, for your entrance, I guess I can't offer better advice! Anyway - other than the way I think you should do it (and of course, as you know, I am always right) I think your order of dances is fine.

:-)

bvan, what song are you doing & what is your "plan"? I'm terribly curious!

Well, don't know if you guys will think it's as cool as I do, but here goes.

In my spare time I take Irish dance lessons. FYI, I'm not QUITE up to "Riverdance" quality yet : ). So... I decided to hire a trio to play the theme from Lord of the Dance for the ceremony. It starts out slow -- perfect for my processional -- then changes to a fast and festive beat toward the end -- perfect for my recessional. It almost sounds like two different songs, which is good.

Then for the "grand entrance" to the reception I was going to have the DJ play another song from L.O.D., Gypsy, which is a really great Irish folk song, perfect for dancing and clapping to the beat. Thought I'd get the wedding party to come in as couples and move to the dance floor, making a large circle and dancing around until we are all in. My flowergirl (niece) LOVES to dance to this song. Her mom is my MOH. I'm hoping she'll go in the center, or Pete and myself, or we'll take turns as couples going in the center "spotlight" while others clap (hopefully) to the beat.

I just wanted to do something different than the typical wedding party slow dance. I KNOW my BMs will get into this and hopefully the guys will too. There's no real dancing involved, just a lot of circling and moving your feet.

P.S. My 2nd choice is YMCA... (just kidding)

P.P.S. OK, I'm ready for the firing squad.

bvan-- I like it! There is acutally a Czech custom that is something like what you described. The Czech custom we are doing ends with the wedding party in a circle around B&G and the B&G dancing to their "first song".

It sounds like you just made up your own tradition!

bvan - I think it's a TERRIFIC idea! How fun! Now I understand what you're doing - I think it will be fabulous.
