Help! I am stumped as to what to do for my ceremony music. Our dj has offered to play the music for the ceremony as well as the reception, but I didn't know if that would be tacky or not. Our wedding is going to be outside at a bed & breakfast by a lake. I am trying to stay as inexpensive as possible, so that's why I'm considering the dj idea. I want traditional ceremony music. Also, since its outside, would live music be hard to hear? Please give me some ideas!!!!!

Heather, I think it would be okay if your DJ played the music. You may want to check out your local Tower Records, Borders, etc and find one of those wedding CD's. A lot of those CD's come with clips of traditional music. You may want to check out www.ultimatewedding.com. They got tons of song lists (traditional and contemporary). One more word on the DJ - get references. See if he (or she?) has ever done outdoor weddings and talk to those folks. I hope this helps!

Heather, I'm kind of in the same boat as you are. Our wedding will be outdoors, at the home of my parents. They live on an acre of land and their gazebo were exchanging our vows in, is quite a ways from the house itself. My dad thinks he can run speaker wire discreetly out to the gazebo area and we will use his very small Bose speakers(excellent sound quality) We thought about using a D.J also for the ceremony, but our reception will be in a different location. So he will have to pack everything up and move it to the reception location. We tried to figure out how to start and stop the music when we needed it, without having someone we know have to do it and then miss out on the whole ceremony. what we plan on doing is having pretaped music, we will have backgound music to play while the guests are waiting, and also for the bridesmaids and flowergirls to walk down the aisle. Then the music will stop(we will record it this way ourselves) and the music we choose to have me walk down the aisle with, will start . I'll know I have 3 minutes or so before the music starts for me to walk, because we will time it when we record it. ( If you like the sound of live ceremony music and you go with pre-recorded, think music with a lot of strings. (has a beautiful live music effect)

Sorry, but IMHO I think you should have live music for the ceremony. Have you done any research on trios or quartet costs? You could also look into using one musician like a flute or guitar player. Do you have a local college or university nearby? Most have a music dept with professors and/or students who perform at weddings and other events for cheap! I hired a trio of Michigan State Univ. students who charge $200/hour. I thinks that's a bargain for live music! You may get an even cheaper price if you use a local college. My ceremony is also outside and we are not using a mic or speakers. The trio said there wasn't a need for speakers as long as they are seated close to the ceremony site (off to the side of "altar")

You may want to check out college music majors, or the local high school (kids are so talented these days) for different musical combinations. You could do a violin and flute, or a brass quartet (there is something so wonderful about a real trumpet playing "Trumpet Voluntary"). The band leader would know who was talented (and dedicated) enough for the job... and kids usually come cheap.

The number of musicians depends on how many guest you have. I am having 100 guests and a string trio for the ceremony, although they said 100 guests and under a duo should be fine. Try students though first, $75/hr. should do. You definately can tell it is a CD or tape, my friend did it 2 weekends ago at her wedding. If you go to a church try talking to the church musicians, they will prob. do it for free or reeeaalllyy cheap.
