Threads : Opinions about Wedding Photographer?

Hi,

I've been searching for a wedding photographer for over a month now, and it's not an easy task I'm finding out. Anyway, I just called this guy yesterday, and he has a web site with pictures of weddings that he's done. So, I went to his site, and I was really impressed. Now, I do not have an artistic bone in my body, so I was wondering if some of you might tell me if you think his pictures are good, or if they are just terrible. Please be honest, I really need help on this one. Oh, and also he is very reasonably priced which totally shocked me when I saw his work. So here's the web site address: http://www.farrisphotography.com/farris_weddings_1.htm

Thanks!!

I liked three of the pictures.

He seems really good at capturing still images, but perhaps lacks the talent of capturing the personalities of the bride and groom. If you like him, maybe ask him how he plans to do that on your day for you?

I think his work is fine, technically speaking,
but you have to consider WHAT kind of photography
you want. Do you want mostly traditional,
posed portraits or candids with an "artsy
fartsy" flair? I notice he does B & W which is
another option you should talk to him about. I
would say his work looked pretty traditional and
posed -- not that there's anything wrong with
that. You just need to have a clear picture in
your head and find someone who is on the same
wavelength.

They look like nice pictures to me. I like the unposed look of some of them. I think my favourite photo overall was the one of the couple kissing on the steps in front of all the city lights. Beautiful!

N- Make a list (if you haven't already) of the type of pictures you are interested in having. Do you want posed, traditional, B&W, Color, a mix of both, lots of candids at the reception etc. Then talk to the photog and see how he reacts to this list. There are pre-made lists like this out on the net (somewhere!). Unfortunately, I do not have an address!

His pics look good!

At first glance, I thought they looked great. It's the whole black and white thing! That medium really focuses things so well.

I agree with bvanderwill that this photographer seems technically solid.

When I started looking at the enlargements and going through the pictures, I really only liked a few. I liked the one of the cake, and the one with the groom pouring champagne into stacked glasses. (?) That one wasn't so appealing technically, but I liked something that it captured of the spirit of the moment, with the bride pulling back and all.

I think that the majority of formal, posed portraits displayed on this site reveales this photographer's basic vision of his role in the day. He seems like a talented photographer who specializes in posed photographs. Parents usually love this, and lots of brides do, too.

We went with someone who specializes in more of a candid, photojournalistic, documentary-style approach (to use the buzz words of the day!) This is why I don't gravitate to this guy's style. But, as most people have said, you have to decide what you really expect and want.

Your gut reaction is the best thing I can tell you to follow. If you really liked what you saw and felt excited, that's worth a lot.

These were our top 2 candidates when we were looking. (This won't help you for finding somebody in your area, but it might help you figure out what you like in terms of style.) I just noticed that Allison's package price for this year went up $500 from when we interviewed her, though! Yikes!!

Mine will be somehthing like what Amy is talking about. If you'd like to see examples you can go to
http://www.weddingstories.com

Again, this will not help if you don't live in the area, but it can give you some ideas for what you want and don't want!

Thanks, girls, for viewing them for me. I guess I'm just concerned right now with not getting ripped off with my wedding photography. I'm just afraid that I'll end up with some amateur claiming to be a professional and charging me way too much money for crappy pictures. Oh, no paranoia is setting in now! Another thing is that I have not found too many photo journalistic photographers in the Indianapolis, IN area. The midwest is always so far behind the times, it's pathetic. Also, other photographers that are within my budget just seemed to have a lot less quality to their pictures than this guy, some of them even had pictures with people's eyes closed and such! Again, thanks for the help!!
