Geez, and I just thought a rehearsal dinner was a nice way to relax the night before with our family & good friends, and eat a wonderful dinner and drink some good wine and chat. I didn't know entertainment or games was required! That's all we did. We were going to give our gifts out, but we were missing one that I ordered for one of the BM's, so we didn't want to give everyone something except her. Oh dear, did I commit a rehearsal dinner faux paux and not even realize it? Oh well - too late now!

Suz, I'm planning on a rehearsal dinner that will be a time for my family to meet Joe's family and spend time together over a good meal, some wine, and dessert! I plan to give the bridesmaids their gifts at a luncheon the day before, and Joe has already given his gifts (paying for half of each groomsman's new suit), so there won't be anything like that. Except that I've redone my mom's wedding album in a handbound, acid-free book, and I might present that to my parents. But I'm leaning toward giving it to them privately. Basically, the rehearsal dinner is going to be a leisurely, fun time with my closest friends and our wonderful families. (Some of us will also be doing some flower arranging afterward!)

Amy, where are you having your dinner? We had ours at La Groceria. Amazing. We had to fight for that, though. Bruce's family wanted to have it at Elephant Walk among other places. It took us a while to get it through their heads that we just wanted a laid back dinner!

La Groceria is great! I had never been there, but I got Joe to take me there after you had posted something about their pasta primavera!! Joe had the lobster ravioli and we each had a glass of wine with our dinner. A lovely evening. (See, you've changed my life, Suz!) We thought about different places to have our dinner, but considering the fact that most of our attendants and all of my family will be from out of town, and that the ceremony is at 10:30 a.m., we decided it would be important to keep the travel to a minimum and keep things as simple as possible. The B&Bs where we're staying are within walking distance of the chapel, and it seemed ideal to stay close rather than dealing with rush hour traffic and parking traumas. SO...we're getting a lot of the food from James Hook & Co. down on the water, and having the dinner in the fellowship hall at the chapel. (The basement of the parish building.) We'll bring in some lamps and candles so we won't need the overhead lights, and dinner will be truly leisurely, because we won't have far to travel afterward. I'm really looking forward to the lobster rolls and clam chowder--a total contrast to the reception meal the next day! The trouble with Elephant Walk is that you have to have a pretty large party in order to get a private room. I'm actually partial to a little Vietnamese place in Brighton, but that wouldn't work for us for a variety of reasons!

Love the Elephant Walk. Could you imagine getting a room at Dali though? If we were getting married in Boston I'd push for that, they have the sweetest waiters and the best food! However - the next day we'd probably gross each other out at the alter with our garlic breath.

But at least you'd be stinky together!

Whoops! Posted that before I was finished! Amy - that sounds like a great idea. And I'm glad you tried La Groceria, it truly is wonderful.

I'm taking the bridesmaids to Dali! I considered it for the rehearsal dinner, but I can't remember why I ruled it out. It seems like price was a factor, and Joe didn't think his elderly Irish parents would be comfortable there. They have some dietary restrictions, and their tastes are kind of provincial. But that's okay, considering that she's 78 and he's 82!! You're right, torif, it's a great place, and walking distance from the church where we'll be married. The garlic shrimp is the best, and I love their sangria.... I used to live around the corner from Dali, on Calvin St. in Somerville. Between Dali, Panini, and the Thai Hut, I was set!!

Why didn't I know about Dali? That's what happens when you don't live in Boston for 8 years. Oh well, my brothers & mom probably wouldn't have cared much for it, they're pretty unadventurous with food.
